About us
Smartmicro is a specialist in Radar technology. We have been working with automotive customers since the company's founding in 1997. Today not only automotive Radars are being developed, but the successful business has been extended to other fields of Radar: Traffic Radar | Security Radar | Airborne Radar. Special defense radar products are developed and poduced as well. Smartmicro manufatures many thousand Radar sensors per year and holds a number of important patents covering its products.
Company
The company was founded in November 1997 by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Hermann Rohling and Dr.-Ing. Ralph Mende as a spin-off of the Institute for Communications Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig.
Prof. Hermann Rohling recently retired from being Vice President of the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) and head of the Communications Department at this University, while Dr. Ralph Mende is the Managing Director of Smartmicro.

Facts
57 employees, most of them scientists, Ph.D. graded or highly specialized engineers form the outstanding staff of smart microwave sensors company. We work in over 1400m² offices and labs, and another 1000m² test field and production labs in a brand new company building close to the technology campus at Braunschweig Airport. The company is steadily growing year by year at a high rate.
New Company Building
A new company building was completed in July 2011. It provides room for 75 employees, new laboratories and an increase of the production area in order to more than double production capacity.
Awards
The Braunschweig Chamber Of Commerce payed homage to smartmicro GmbH during the official celebration of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the company. The German newspaper "Guter Rat" awarded the Audi corporation this special distinction for its innovative driver assistance system "Audi Side Assist". This Lane Change Assist system was developed by smartmicro GmbH in association with Hella KG. The state of Niedersachsen awarded smartmicro GmbH this prize at the Hanover Trade Fair 2001 in April for the very successful co-operation with the Technical University of Braunschweig. The German Insitute of Navigation (DGON) awarded Dr. Ralph Mende the Wolfgang-Martini-Prize at the International Radar Symposium October 2000 in Berlin for his work in automotive radar.

Partners
We co-operate with selected partners in Germany and in the U.S. in the development of high performance antennae, MMICs and RF modules.
Furthermore, close co-operations exist with the Technical Universities of Braunschweig and Hamburg-Harburg, Germany, as well as with private and federal research institutes in the Braunschweig region and all over Germany.
