UMRR-07xx Blind Spot Detection Sensor: The “Blind Spot Detection” (BSD) sensor is optimized for short range detection, the field of view is selected to cover the full blind spot warning zone, which is defined in the related ISO norms corresponding to this application. Detection algorithms, tracking, object-to-lane mapping and the warning algorithm (illuminating warning LEDs) are performed by the individual sensor. No extra ECU is required.
The sensor represents a derivative of the UMRR platform. The signal processing software is specialized to handle the typical situations for this application: - Lowest speed driving (2m/s) in dense traffic conditions (excellent object separation capability). - High speed driving (requiring fast reaction time and correct situation assessment). - Issue warning if any object moving at > 5km/h ground speed is inside the warning zone. - No warning on stationary objects. - Early detection of vehicles being overtaken (appropriate field of view). - Early detection of vehicles that overtake (sufficient max. range, short cycle time). - Very low false alarm rate. - Built-in warning algorithm, high comfort for the driver (early warning, intuitive reception).
Please find below a snapshot of a sensor system, comprising two standalone BSD sensors, each covering the warning zone on either side of the car. The upper two camera images show the left side of the radar equipped car. A vehicle is present, the warning LED (represented by the large red bar on the left) is illuminated. On the other side, stationary reflectors are present, no warning is issued.

Sensor System: Two sensors may be combined to build a system for the right and left side of a car. The units may be used as independent standalone units or as two slaves (sensor satellites), intended for sensor fusion, reporting to a central ECU. For the sensor fusion case, it is in particular reasonable to combine the two BSD sensors with a third medium range (70m) or long range (120m) sensor.
