Traffic Data Collection with smartmicro

smartmicro’s Canadian partner MI-8 Innovation, Inc. has developed a mobile unit to allow traffic data collection on a temporary basis for both, real-time analysis and traffic studies.

Battery powered, the units can support multiple units of smartmicro’s UMRR radar sensors to collect traffic data on two or more approaches at the same time. An on-board computer collects, stores and transmits data through wireless cellular communication (LTE) using the MQTT publish-subscribe-based messaging protocol.

A number of such stations are currently deployed on a major Montréal arterial undergoing construction of a 11 km BRT line scheduled for completion in 2022. The data collected allows traffic engineers to assess the impacts and effectiveness of the planned mitigation measures.
